Time stands still for the Sofaman. But is rootedness a curse in a world of mobility and transience? Does being a recluse stop one's world from going out of orbit? Does moving necessarily mean progress, or is it better to stay put? Explore these issues in the brand new play Sofaman, a collaboration between local theatre company The Necessary Stage and The KnAM Theatre from Russia. This groundbreaking intercultural and multilingual work will be staged at The Necessary Stage Black Box from November 5 to 15, 2009.
Written by The Necessary Stage’s Resident Playwright Haresh Sharma, Sofaman is co-directed by Artistic Director Alvin Tan and The KnAM Theatre’s Founder-Director Tatiana Frolova. The production will assemble an outstanding cast of actors from both countries with Julius Foo, Siti Khalijah and Jean Ng from Singapore, and Elena Bessonova, Dmitry Bocharov and Vladimir Dmitriev from Russia. The multi-talented Frolova will also enthrall audiences with a unique lyrical dimension to the play through the use of soundscape and multimedia.
SYNOPSIS A Singaporean woman and a Russian man fall in love. Where do they settle down? Two lonely women form a deep bond. What happens when tragedy strikes? A dying man and his confidant exchange stories of love and sacrifice.
What is it like to be caught in a rut when the world around you is moving at such high speed?
Poignant, humorous and provocative, Sofaman celebrates the humanity of difference. The play will be performed in English, Russian and Mandarin. |
